Baby Checkup

Zaheeda has a doctor's appointment this morning and White Grandma is taking care of the daycare kids for about an hour. By "taking care" I mean making sure the little ones don't kill themselves and the older ones don't kill each other.

Violin Performance & Soup

Big day today. First Maya was surprised when her White Grandma arrived a day earlier than she thought - then she had a violin performance at St. Joseph and she did an outstanding job. After the concert we went to Eddington's and had soup for lunch - followed by a quick trip to the Roseville Mall to pick up curtains for the bedroom.

Here she is at the Apple store checking out the new MacBook Air - notice she's reading her own blog - such vanity.

Waiting for Baby

We seem to be only a couple weeks away from meeting our goal of expanding the family by 25%. Re-enforcements are being put into position - White Grandma is arriving this weekend and will be relieved by Brown Grandma the following week - diapers have been ordered, crib has been painted and assembled. Now we wait.

Cleveland Wok

Last night we picked up dinner from the Cleveland Wok, this Asian restaurant in Highland. For some reason we've never tried it before and it turned out to be pretty good. We usually get Asian food from Vina across the street because Maya is friends with Vivian the who's parents own the place and they always give us a ten percent discount. So we felt a little weird sneaking into the Cleveland Wok - we'd hate for word to get out and lose our discount at Vina.

Furniture

Just our luck that I happen to see this right after we already got new furniture... If I had one of these chairs every time Zaheeda would come and ask me to do something I'd say, "Your Jedi mind tricks wont work on me."

Wednesday but like Friday

Wednesday is the last day of the school week for Maya - now we have to think of something for her to do over the next few days.

Anniversary

For our anniversary Zaheeda didn't want to go anywhere (due to her condition) so she sent us to Lunds to get her a fancy dessert from the bakery and some cream soda....

One of these puppies (the cinnamon ones) will be Maya's Grandma and Grandpa's new dog. Maya and I have been kicking around names and we have come up with Bender.

Painting

Zaheeda has been insisting that I'm lazy because I'm in no rush to start painting. I however take exception to this characterization. I haven't been putting off painting because I'm lazy, but rather because I just hate painting - what she is seeing as a lazy bum is just a person with very clear ideas as to his likes and dislikes.

The Crib

We pulled out Maya's old crib from the closet this afternoon and got it all put together for the new baby. Now I have to re-paint it since there are crayon scribbles all over it from the previous owner....

Lunch Controversy

San Diego kid came up with what he thought was a good idea of offering grilled sandwiches for sale to students as an alternative to school lunch. The principal however was quick to stifle such a creative act of initiative by suspending the kid for two days and thereby instilling an even more import lesson, that life is largely about learning to eat what the state feeds you. - Link

This is Your Brain on Donuts

Northwestern University has done a study which scientifically proves that the human brain goes "Whohooo!!!" when it thinks about donuts. - Link

New Blanket

Maya got a new blanket today. She is confident she can get almost all her cuddling done in it.

Friday, March 07, 2008

Zaheeda is making spaghetti and meatballs for supper in her brand new Mario Batali cast iron pot - it was her early B-day present.

Dippin' Dots

Maya was off from school today but that didn't mean she had the day totally off as she had a make-up violin lesson at 10:45am. After lessons we stopped at Cub to buy some groceries and they had Dippin' Dots on sale 10 for $10. So I came up with a ten day practicing incentive plan for Maya - for the next ten days everyday she practices an hour she gets a dish of Dippin' Dots. If she doesn't practice she loses a Dippin Dots and it gets forfeited to her mother or father who are on record saying they will eat the Dippin' Dots right in front of her. If you control the Dippin' Dots you control the girl.

(Note: It is 2:53 PM and she is already in the middle of her practice session for the day)

Rhyme Time Update

FYI - Just wanted to let everyone know (all three or four of you) that Maya is still doing the Rhyme Times she's just been pretty busy for the last month or so. For 2008 she is going to start reading and writing her own poems. We should have a new one up in the next few days and then be back on regular schedule after that.

Kitchen Timer

We got a little kitchen timer that we use for Maya to time her practice sessions (Is it just me or has this whole practicing thing become an unending topic of discussion on this bog?) so she can keep track of the exact amount of time she is practicing different skill sets; i.e., sight-reading, new pieces, etc. She likes having an exact measurement of everything she's doing, but if I were her I'd keep an eye out for people moving the timer back while she's practicing.... It can kind of make for long practice sessions. :-)
