The Duo

Annah and Maya are close - sometimes we fear a bit too close.

Environmentalist

This morning on the refrigerator we found a sign designed by Maya advising us to be sure to shut off the lights when we leave a room in order to conserve energy. Anyone who has spent any time at our house would understand the irony, or more specifically the hypocrisy of Maya advising anyone to shut off lights when leaving a room since she roams the entire house leaving on every light in her wake. As an environmentalist though I'd say she may have the makings of a career, since being a hypocrite is practically a prerequisite of the profession. All she needs now is a private jet so she can fly around the world and lecture people on the necessity of reducing carbon emissions.

Stickers

It was Napoleon Bonaparte who said, "I've discovered something amazing: men will die for ribbons." Like the beloved military tyrant I too have discovered something amazing, Maya will practice for stickers. We got the idea from Lydia who admitted she practiced for stickers. Right now Maya is being rewarded with these really snazzy Sponge Bob stickers but if she does a really good job maybe she'll get one with glitter on it, but of course glitter like everything else must be earned.

Violin Recital

Saturday Maya had her recital and did very well. We now have one more recital coming up next month and then it's summer vacation. Where does the time go?

MN Tea Party

Went to the MN Tea Part at the Capitol yesterday and there were a lot of people. We walked around for a bit but then had to hurry home in time to see Lost.

Here's a picture of a few of the local agitators.

Here's Maya over by the scenic overlook across from Fort Snelling. We were out for a little early evening bike ride/walk.

Ritz Crackers

Yesterday I was hanging out in Maya's room and I noticed she had some Ritz crackers on her night stand. She asked me if I knew why she kept the crackers in her room, and of course I had not given it a second thought being that she leaves food along with everything else imagineable all over the house - some Ritz crackers on the nightstand didn't seem the least bit out of the ordinary. She informed me that there were two reasons she keeps Ritz crackers in her room.

"For one reason" she said, "sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and I'm a little hungry so I have something nearby to eat, and the other reason is when you send me to my room for misbehaving I know that I don't have to go hungry, I can snack on the crackers."

I told that sounded like some pretty good foresight on her part but asked why she just doesn't simply do what she's supposed to so that she doesn't have to worry about being sent to her room hungry - apparently this possibility never occurred to her. Seems she's resigned to the idea that being regularly sent to her room for the night is all part of the cost of doing business these days.

Easter Walk

Yesterday we took both the girls out for a little walk. Zaheeda re-sprained her ankle on a pothole while crossing the street but other than that we had a nice time. While over by the Ford plant we saw a turkey and Annah got pretty excited about that.

On the Swings

It was so nice to finally have some pleasant weather that the girls were out playing on the swings. Annah in particular really likes getting out of the house.

Lettuce Garden

Grandma and Grandpa were over this weekend and Grandpa made Zaheeda a lettuce garden. Zaheeda has been in desperate need of a something of this sort in order to defend her vegetables against the rabbits and groundhogs. The design came from Martha Stewart herself, so that's a good thing.

Recital Practice

This is Maya last night at St. Joseph's performing an old review piece. She said she had one screw up but that was because she didn't know how the pianist was going to handle the repeats.

Violin Recital

Maya has a little violin recital tonight, it's not really an official recital just sort of a practice one. Later on in April she has her spring recital at Concordia College which is the one that is the big deal.

Back from Wisconsin

After a week in the great state of Wisconsin Maya is back. She had a really good time on vacation with the haircuts, knitting, visiting with Auntie, Great Grandma and Grandpa and of course lets not forget the hours of watching satellite television. Now that she's back we're working on getting her back into her routine so she can finish the school year off right.

Maple Syrup

Maya went with her Grandpa to see how they make maple syrup this afternoon and she had a good time. As for syrup - mmmmm.... Tasty.

New Haircut

Maya went with her Grandma and got a haircut today. She's looking pretty fine.

Visiting Great Grandma Schmitt

Maya as part of her whirlwind Wisconsin vacation traveled to Medford yesterday to visit her Great Grandma and Grandpa Schmitt. Here she is performing with her violin while still sporting her knitted head and wristband. Is she forging an entire new fashion trend? Lets hope not.
